Non-resident members of the armed forces temporarily stationed in this state as a result of military orders may be exempt from paying ad valorem taxes on certain vehicles.
To Exempt Ad Valorem Tax, You Must Have
- A notarized affidavit or letter from the service member’s commanding officer stating that the service member is stationed in this state must be submitted to the Office of the Tax Commissioner during each renewal period.
- The service member must be the titled owner of the vehicle; ad valorem tax exemption cannot be extended toward leased vehicles.
- The service member cannot claim homestead exemption in Gwinnett County.
In addition, not more than one vehicle jointly owned with a non-resident spouse may be exempt from ad valorem tax.
