Acceptable Proof of Insurance

When the Georgia insurance system does not indicate valid proof of insurance, the following will be acceptable proof of Georgia liability insurance:

  • An original 30-Day Insurance Binder with an effective date that is less than 30 days old. Faxed copies are not accepted.
  • The original Declarations Page from your existing auto insurance policy if the vehicle purchase occurred within the last 30 days.
  • A Georgia Fleet insurance card with the words "Georgia Fleet" on it.
  • A Self-Insured insurance card and a Certificate of Self-Insurance.

Your insurance card is still valid proof of insurance for the following:

  • Required while traveling in another state that may not be able to access the Georgia database.
  • Exchange of information if you are involved in an accident.
  • Vehicles covered on a Fleet Policy.
  • Vehicles covered on a Self-Insured Policy.

Verification of your insurance status by Gwinnett County tag offices is accessed electronically (except for vehicles covered under a Fleet Policy and vehicles covered under a Self-Insured Policy).  If your vehicle is already registered in Georgia, you can check your motor vehicle insurance status by contacting customer service or by clicking here.

Lapse of Insurance, Pending Suspensions and Suspensions

A lapse in insurance coverage is any period greater than 10 days that a vehicle does not carry insurance coverage. The insurance company transmits a termination to the state database which generates the letter.  Any lapse of insurance coverage will incur a $25 pending suspension fee. The Georgia Department of Revenue will send a letter to the titled / registered owner of the vehicle requiring the pending suspension fee to be paid within 30 days.

If you have received one of these letters and would like to have more information, please call customer service at 770-822-8818. You can also email Tag@gwinnettcounty.com with questions.

If an insurance pending suspension fee of $25 is not paid within 30 days of the notification letter’s date, the vehicle's registration will be suspended. To reinstate the registration, the vehicle owner must have a "Valid Insurance Coverage" indicator in the Georgia Electronic Insurance Compliance System, pay the $25 pending suspension fee and a $60 reinstatement fee, and pay any other registration fees and vehicle ad valorem taxes due. Any additional lapses in insurance coverage and/or suspensions will result in additional fines and penalties including having the vehicle’s registration cancelled.

For more information regarding suspension fees click here.
